New York Republican Rep. Peter King is apparently a complete moron. He plans on introducing legislation to ban the carrying of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a "high-profile government official." This is nothing more than a way to put the screws to some innocent individual who is otherwise legally carrying a firearm, as it will do absolutely nothing to prevent tragedies like the one in Arizona.
Mr. King, could you please tell us why someone who is willing to violate the laws against murdering someone would be deterred by your proposed legislation? Do you really think the criminal mind will say "hmmm, I was going to murder that crooked politician, but since I cannot carry my gun within a 1,000 feet of him, I won't do that"?
Mr. King, I do not care what party you are in. Your constituents should send you packing at the first opportunity as you clearly lack the ability to think logically or rationally. If you so fear "We the People" (i.e., the "little people"), you should go into hiding somewhere and avoid being an elected official. We would all be better off for it.
UPDATE: Instapundit points to a couple of different commentators: Benjamin Domenech expounds on King's "silly idea" and Ann Althouse further points out the idiocy of this gun-free bubble proposal. I especially like the first comment at Althouse's site: "What a wuss." Yep, that about sums it up.
